DW Elite Decks was featured in the June 2022 issue of Cedar Creek Life for a screened porch project where we converted an underused deck into a functional space. The existing deck was rarely used, so we focused on building a solution that made the space practical and worth the investment.
We did not approach this as just adding another structure. We focused on solving a common problem we see. Outdoor spaces that look good but are not used.
The Problem: An Unused Deck with Limited Function
The original deck had the size and location to be valuable, but it lacked the features needed for consistent use. Exposure to weather, temperature swings, and insects made it uncomfortable for much of the year.
This is a common situation. Many decks are built without considering how they will actually be used day to day. Over time, they become secondary spaces rather than extensions of the home.
The homeowner wanted more than a surface upgrade. They wanted a space that felt complete and usable across multiple seasons.
The Solution: A Fully Enclosed Screened Porch
We converted the open deck into a screened porch designed for flexibility and long-term performance. The goal was to maintain an open feel while giving the homeowner control over the environment.
This required more than adding screens. We made structural updates and integrated systems that allow the space to adapt to changing conditions.
Key elements of the project included:
- EZ Breeze window system for airflow and seasonal control
- Electric heaters to extend use into colder months
- Finished ceiling and framing upgrades to create a more complete, interior-like feel
- Custom layout based on how the homeowner planned to use the space
Each part of the build was selected to support comfort, durability, and daily use.
How the Space Changed After the Build
One of the biggest changes after the project was how often the space was used. What was once an occasional deck became part of the home’s regular living space.
That shift happens when the space is comfortable and controlled. When airflow, temperature, and protection are addressed, the space becomes practical.
The Cedar Creek Life feature captured this well. The porch now supports everyday activities like relaxing and gathering, not just seasonal use.
Our Approach to the Build
Projects like this depend on more than basic construction. They require planning, system integration, and attention to detail.
Our team, led by Dan Milford, focuses on building outdoor spaces that perform over time. We look at how each component works together and make sure the final result meets the homeowner’s expectations.
That approach is what allows a project to move from a simple upgrade to a long-term solution.
Screened Porch Benefits
This project reflects what homeowners expect from outdoor spaces today. Areas that are usable, comfortable, and built to last.
A properly built screened porch offers:
- Protection from insects and weather
- Extended seasonal use
- A functional space for daily living
- Added value through increased usability
When done correctly, it becomes one of the most used areas of the home.
Why the Project Performed as Expected
We did not approach this project as a simple upgrade. The goal was to make the space usable and reliable throughout the year.
That is the difference between improving a deck and building a usable living space.
If your current outdoor space is not being used the way you expected, there is usually a better way to design it.
