For centuries, Shawnee, Kansas has been acknowledged as a place of new beginnings. From the first settlers arriving over the horizon to the people who have found their lives, fun and fortunes here, the community has always pointed forward. Despite its rich history, Shawnee continues to offer opportunities for a better life, education, and job. The city is open to new ideas and encourages modern pioneers to start new ventures. No matter where you are in life or what your dreams may be, Shawnee has everything you need to succeed. DW Elite Decks' success as a deck builder in Shawnee is firsthand evidence.

The Shawnee Indians signed treaties in 1825, which removed them from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Missouri to Kansas, where they settled in Johnson County. The treaties gave them 1,600,000 acres of land in the area, but in 1854, they surrendered the land for $829,000 and 200,000 acres to be distributed in individual allotments. Later, in 1875, most of the Shawnee Indians moved to the Shawnee Reservation in Oklahoma. It is uncertain whether any of them were Shawnee deck builders, but they likely had the physical ability to do so.

Shawnee was re-incorporated in 1922 as a city of the 3rd class. It passed a bond issue in 1960 to build its first City Hall. It was incorporated as a city of the 1st class in 1971 and annexed areas to K-7, south of 55th, and north of 55th between the railroad and Locust. In 1987, it annexed land south of 55th to 83rd/79th west to Kansas River, and its size increased to 42 square miles. Gamblin Park was named in honor of Police Officer Donald B. Gamblin, Jr. after he was killed in the line of duty in 1991.

In 1997, a well-known Shawnee deck builder was established and continued its operations for decades. In 1998, a third fire station was added in western Shawnee to improve response times. In 2000, the population reached 50,000. On March 24, 2001, Charles J. Stump Park was dedicated and named after the first full-time police chief in Shawnee. An antique-looking clock tower was added to the streetscape in front of City Hall. The Johnson County Landfill property was annexed, including the last remaining portion of Monticello Township inside the city limits. In 2006, Shawnee celebrated its 150th birthday.

In 2007, Shawnee was named one of the Top 25 Most Affordable Suburbs in the Country. The following year, in 2008, it was designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the American League of Bicyclists; one of only two communities in the State of Kansas and one of 89 communities in the United States to receive the honor. This same year, Money Magazine listed Shawnee as one of its Top 100 Places to Live. DW Elite Decks, a deck builder in Shawnee, had completed its 2000th project.
