Pergolas & Arbors

Pergolas are still popular throughout the Kansas City area for a few key reasons. Firstly, they have more than one application. Some are for shade and some are for decoration. Most are for both. Secondly, their designs are infinite. They can be freestanding or attached to house wall. They’re often incorporated into a deck structure. Lastly, there’s now more than just wood to use building them.

Cedar Pergolas

Pergolas have traditionally been built using cedar lumber. That’s because they have fairly substantial spans without intermittent support. Cedar stays straight as it dries out. High quality cedar doesn’t warp, twist, cup, crown or bow. However, most homeowners desire low or no maintenance outdoor structures. Cedar is not low-maintenance. As a matter of fact, it’s pretty much the opposite. Cedar pergolas need to be washed and stained to keep their natural look. This means maintaining them every three to four years.

Aluminum Pergolas

Therefore, aluminum pergolas are beginning to find their place. The demand for a more durable building material is quickly rising. Cardinal Architecture makes a very sturdy structure. Their kits can be delivered based on a specific design. These systems are fairly to assemble by an experienced deck builder. Cardinal extrudes all of it’s aluminum members. Powder coating is applied to exposed surfaces through an electrostatic process. This finish will last for many years and with no maintenance required.

Applications

Pergolas can provide substantial shade from the overbearing sun. However, they won’t typically block it like a solid roof. Their surface has to be left open to avoid carrying a substantial snow load unless it’s engineered for such an application. Nonetheless, the ambience a pergola adds is unique. They are designed from ornate to simple and from traditional to contemporary. Therefore, there’s really no setting, architecture or landscape they can’t compliment. However, that’s with right artist behind the brush.
