Cedar Decks

Cedar decks, screened porches and pergolas are still fairly popular in the Kansas City area. Most deck builders still consider the wood’s use at some point. Cedar is sometimes the best option for certain aspects of a deck, porch or pergola project. DW Elite Decks has designed and built thousands of outdoor structures since its inception as as an Olathe, Kansas deck builder.

These pictures represent some of the cedar decks we’ve installed throughout the Kansas City area since 1997. All of our decks are code-compliant and permit completed structures. No.1 Grade Architectural Knotty Cedar is exclusively used for all appearance members. Cedar has become significantly more expensive over the past few years. However, it’s still a highly sought after building material. This is because of it’s natural rot resistance and raw rustic appeal.

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar is an exterior grade softwood. It’s natural oils provide protection from moisture. They also deter many types of insects from eating it. These characteristics make it a great building material for cedar decks, porches and outdoor structures.

A cedar deck’s authentic beauty is unrivaled by man-made materials. Nearly every synthetic decking manufacturer has attempted to emulate cedar’s natural appearance. So far, none have successfully achieved this goal. Protecting a wood deck’s raw beauty after it’s been installed is the main challenge for both deck builders and their customers.

While exquisitely beautiful, cedar’s natural look is high-maintenance. It takes continual frequent care to preserve.. Composite decking and metal railings now own the lion’s share of the deck industry. They require very little or no maintenance. Cedar is not used nearly as much as a decade or so ago. Nonetheless, wood decks, screened porches, and pergolas still have a place in the Kansas City deck industry. As long as the cost stays within reason, a cedar deck should continue its own place. That’s unless a composite deck’s technology finally catches up with it.
